Group: Schizophyllum
This small group of mushrooms is uniquely recognized by it's split gills. Each gill is split longitudinally into two or more gills!!
Schizophyllum commune (Split Gill Mushroom)

Found on the Manawatu Gorge Track in Palmerston North growing on dead wood in July, 2000, but can be found year round!!

Cap: Fan shaped and small, about 2-4cm wide. Upper surface whitish and covered in small messy hairs. Cap margin has a purple brown tinge and is lobed.

Gills: Split longitudinally. Tan to light brown in colour. Well spaced.

Spore Print: white.

Stem: Short or rudimentary. About 0.5cm long and laterally attached to the cap.

Edibility: Too small and tough!!
